Surveying Conditions

To obtain the most accurate PCI measurements, it is important to conduct road surveying in appropriate weather and pavement conditions, while also ensuring proper light exposure.
Avoid conducting road surveying during rain, snow or any other precipitation. The precipitation can obstruct the vision of the road for the smartphone camera and add additional risk for the driver. Avoid conducting road surveying during foggy conditions.
Light cloudy or mostly clear weather conditions are optimal for road surveying. These conditions provide consistent exposure levels and minimize glares on objects. Sunset is not recommended for road surveying due to rapid changes in conditions, which can lead to inaccurate object positioning within the frame. Nighttime road surveying should be avoided as natural light is insufficient, compromising data quality.
Make sure the windshield of your surveying car is clear at all times during surveying. A dirty windshield could lead to inaccurate data, which could potentially result in an inaccurate PCI or road segmentation.
Only conduct road surveying on roads with a clear road surface, free of any precipitation such as snow or rain. Ensure there are no puddles on the road. The road surface should not be covered with leaves, snow, ice, litter, or any objects that obstruct the vision of the road surface for the smartphone's camera.
